Geelbekrenostervoël (Yellow-billed Oxpecker) was teen 1897 heeltemal uitgewis in Suid-Afrika, maar het onverklaarbaar 82 jaar later weer verskyn in die Kruger Nasionale Park. Min is  bekend oor hierdie  voëls, maar daar is tans navorsing oor hulle.

Die uitsterwing was as gevolg van Runderpes ( aansteeklike virale siekte wat vee en sommige wilde diere aantas) en giftige stowwe waarmee vee gedip is teen bosluise. In 1979 het hulle skielik begin verskyn in die Shingwedzi area, sonder enige menslike betrokkenheid van hervestiging.

Vandag is hierdie voëltjies steeds skaars, maar getalle neem tog wonderbaarlik toe. Hulle word dikwels saam met Rooibekrenostervoëls op veral buffels opgemerk. Een stukkie goeie nuus uit die natuur!

  1. I’ve seen photos of birds on animals before – in fact, in the American south, I have seen cattle egrets on cattle. Maybe you have the same thing. But I have never seen anything like this, Dina! Incredible. I can’t believe the look of this kind of cattle – amazing. The bird is very pretty, too. And yes, it’s refreshing to read a little good news for a change – how amazing that these birds just reappeared again. They must have been somewhere… 🙂

    1. We also have cattle egrets, mostly seen with domestic cattle.
      These animals are wild African Buffalo.Probably one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. They look like peaceful cattle, but beware if you confront them on foot… you wont live to tell the story!
